Choosing the right base van is one of the most important decisions when planning your camper conversion. In the UK and Europe, two categories dominate the scene: the Fiat Ducato shape (which includes the Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer) and the Mercedes Sprinter / VW Crafter duo.
Let’s take a closer look at how they compare, so you can decide which one is best suited for your vanlife goals.
Fiat Ducato / Citroën Relay / Peugeot Boxer
Often referred to as "Sevel vans" (after the factory where they’re made), these three models are essentially the same van with different badges. The Ducato also has a slightly different engine. They've become a popular choice for converters across Europe for good reason. They are available in 5.4m, 6m and 6.4m lengths with 2 height options.

Pros:
- Best-in-class internal width
The most noticeable advantage is their width—around 10cm wider than Crafters/Sprinters and wide enough to sleep sideways without needing expensive flares. This opens up valuable floor space for living and storage. - Boxy, conversion-friendly shape
The walls are nearly vertical, and the interior is more rectangular than curved, making it ideal for cabinetry, insulation, and lining work. - Affordable and widely available
These vans are everywhere. That means parts are cheap, repair knowledge is widespread, and second-hand models can be found at a range of price points. - Great fuel economy
Typically more economical than heavier rear-wheel drive vans, especially if you’re carrying a lighter load or doing shorter trips.
Cons:
- Less refined driving experience
The cab is less premium compared to Sprinters/Crafters and ride comfort isn’t quite as smooth on long trips. There are many features that can be added on from the factory to enhance their specifications. - Limited 4x4 options
If you’re planning to live or travel full-time off-grid in rugged terrain, you may find the lack of all-wheel-drive variants limiting. - Brand limitations
While perfectly functional, these vans don’t carry the same prestige or resale value as a high-spec Sprinter or Crafter conversion.
Best for: Value for money, and those prioritising interior space.
Mercedes Sprinter / Volkswagen Crafter
Representing the more premium end of the panel van market, the Sprinter and Crafter offer a refined driving experience and are built with durability in mind. The Crafter was co-developed with Mercedes for many years before VW developed its own platform post-2017. They still share many similarities and are both available in 6m and 7m lengths with 2 height options.

Pros:
- Superior driving comfort
They're smooth, quiet, and confidence-inspiring on motorways, hills, and long-distance drives. - High-end feel
Better soundproofing, more comfortable seating, and advanced driver-assist features in newer models make life on the road feel more car-like. - 4x4 and AWD options
Both vans offer factory or aftermarket four-wheel-drive options, making them the go-to for mountain roads, snowy winters, or serious off-grid exploration. - Taller as standard
The height options are taller than the Ducato equivalents, respectively providing a good option for taller individuals
- Strong resale value
Because of their reputation, Sprinter and Crafter-based conversions tend to fetch a higher resale price—especially if built to a high standard.
Cons:
- Narrower interior
The internal width is often just shy of what you need for a side-to-side bed, which can restrict layout options unless you install flares. - Curved bodywork
Installing furniture can be more time-consuming due to the rounded walls and less uniform interior, adding labour or complexity to a build. - Higher purchase and maintenance costs
Sprinters and Crafters are generally more expensive to buy, and servicing (especially for Mercedes) can cost significantly more than for a Ducato.
Best for: Off-grid adventurers with bigger budgets and taller individuals
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to which van is best—it all comes down to your budget, intended travel style, and personal priorities.
